| I realized that I was so upset about the girl stealing my picture and putting it up as her own that I forgot to make sure that I covered what is required for this weeks post. All of the information I put up on my page is accurate, I didn't lie or mislead anyone in anyway. I am a confident individual and I'm ok with the person that I am. I do somethings that some people might not approve of but I also work very hard, go to school full time, I take care of my dog and my boyfriend (which is a FULL time job), and I assume that the people who I allow to be my friends on myspace are close enough to me that they won't judge me for the ways I chose to spend my weekends. If i did try to lie about anything one of my friends would call me out for sure. It wouldn't do me any good to try! |

myspace continued
myspace
I created my myspace account about two years ago I think, maybe a little less. I had been on facebook for about six months and I had friends who went to Western Oregon University and facebook was not available for them yet. I really just wanted to be able to have the same contact with my Western friends as I did with my OSU friends. I loved being able to view my friends photos and get updates on their lives that were minor enough that they may not think to call me to talk to me about but that I still wanted to be aware of.
I was always much more protective of myself on myspace than I was on facebook. For some weird reason I felt safer knowing that all of the people on facebook were in college which meant that most were normal!? They had to have something going on in their lives other than stalking girls on facebook. They had to be at class at least 12 to 15 hours a week. Being in college also meant that most of the people on facebook were probably right around my age. When I picture a crazy, creeper, stalker, he’s usually not in college. Most of my family is on myspace which is nice, I can keep in contact with them, they can check out my photo albums and see what I’m doing with my free time and I can do the same to them.
I have a very entertaining story about myspace. My cousin who is a young man who lives in the Portland area and I are friends on myspace, and he came across, somehow!!? a woman who had a profile that said that she lived in Salem and she had two kids and her profile picture was a picture of ME! It was the craziest thing, my cousin emailed me immediately and I went straight to her page to see if he was joking and sure enough her profile was a picture of me! She stole my profile picture from me!!! I was furious, I sent her an email and told her to remove my picture immediately and asked her what kind of an idiot would do that. I used come choice words that I won’t repeat here, but I was very angry and said things that were not very nice. I really wanted to comment on her page telling everyone she was a liar and a fake but you have to be someone’s friend to comment on their myspace page so I looked on her profile at the picture she had up of me and there were 7 or 8 comments from men telling her how good she looked in this picture. I sent every one of them a message on myspace telling them to look at my profile and see that this girl was stealing my pictures, they did and they helped me retaliate by posting comments on her main page saying that she was a liar and adding links to my page so that everyone could see that this wasn’t actually her. I contacted Tom at myspace and he deleted her account a couple of days later. I felt violated somehow. So angry!!
I thought that story was very fitting after last weeks post!

So Much Cooler Online
| The video for Brad Paisley's 'So Much Cooler Online' is probably a very accurate description of some peoples online experiences. It was very entertaining, I don't listen to country music so I had never heard the song before, but I love music and I would never complain about the chance to get to do an assignment that involves music videos. The characters in the music video were very average people, a middle aged man who is slightly overweight, delivers pizza for a living and lives in his parents basement. His parents are probably in their sixty's, married to each other probably for most of their lives. They live very average lives, make a very average amount of money, and have very average physical appearances. In the sons online profile he says that he is over six feet tall, has six pack abs, he models for Calvin Klein and has been in GQ. He said that he lives in Malibu, drives a Maserati, and loves drinking wine. All of the characteristics that he says are true about himself in his online profile are obviously the characteristics that he sees as being appealing to the opposite sex. The whole theme of the video was about him never having gotten to second base with a female. The goal of the online profile was to get interaction with females that he probably wouldn't get if he was truthful in his online profile. It's a three and a half long music video so the story doesn't get too deep, it doesn't develop very much. The father in the music video towards the end is shown creating a myspace profile and his wife comments about why all of her husbands friends on myspace are so chesty. It is very hard to see but on the computer screen in that seen it is possible to see a very pretty, young, blond woman on his friends list. It is pretty clear that if most of his friends are young, beautiful women that he probably isn't being totally honest on his profile. His profile probably looks something like his sons. I thought about a couple of things when I saw the music video. The first thing was, how do you go about getting a collection of believable photos of a person who is not you? We all have imaginations and we can all make up information about a phantom person for the profile information but the picture thing would seem to me to be pretty tricky. I have a myspace account and I have a facebook account I have a personal experience with using pictures of a person who is not the person described on the profile. It 's a pretty good one so I am saving that for my week three post. The other thing I was thinking was what good does it do a person to lie about every aspect of their lives to talk to a person who may or may not be who they say they are, and who you'll never be able to actually meet in person? Maybe the person is trying to develop better communication skills by communicating with the opposite sex online, or maybe the person isn't interested in meeting outside of his created online world. Either way it seems like a waste of time to me. I would never personally chat online to someone that I don't already know or that isn't somehow connected to my life, maybe they are a friend of a friend that I have seen somewhere, I would probably talk to them if they contacted me online. If I have never seen the person before in my life though I'm not going to allow them to by my friend on myspace or facebook. Too many crazies out there. |

Abstinence :(
Abstinence
If not for this assignment I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that I would, could never go 24 hours without some sort of internet interaction. I use the internet at work, at home, at school. I need it.
What I did to make it easier on myself was to use the internet to do all of the things I thought I would need to do on the internet first thing in the morning when I woke up. I checked my work email, my school email, and my personal email, yes I have three, what a disaster. After I checked my email I used the internet to check my bank account balance online, I got on blackboard to check if anything was due or if my professors had posted any assignments or announcements. I use myspace and facebook to communicate with friends of mine whom I don’t go to school with or that I don’t see very often so I checked that out just to be sure that no one needed my for anything of any real importance. I looked all clear. I remembered that a new song just came out by Outkast that I heard on satellite radio the day before so I checked out itunes and they didn’t have it, I checked limewire and found it, downloaded it and found two other Joss Stone songs I was looking for so I downloaded those and plugged my ipod in and synced it really quick. At that point I had done all of the things that I thought I had to get done on the internet within the next 24 hours. All of the things I did that morning were the same things that I do throughout my day almost everyday of the week. My dependence on the internet is more than evident.
Maybe it was because I knew I couldn’t access the internet for 24 hours but throughout that day I thought of a million things I should have done that morning while I was online. At one point in the day I wanted to check the balance on my credit card, which can be done by phone but after listening to seven different prompts before I hear ‘to hear your current balance press 8’ it takes me at least five or six minutes. I would much rather hop online and check it out. I wanted to check out a bill pay that I made online through my bank, I wanted to look on ebay for a product that I discovered recently to compare the price with the in store price, I thought of a couple of other songs that I really wanted to download so that I would have them on my ipod for my workout that night. To be completely honest I feel like I replaced time that would have been spent on the internet with time thinking about what I would do on the internet when I got to use it again.
I use the internet for entertainment, business, school, work, research, my whole life. I am dependent on the internet. My hypothesis is that as time goes on my dependence will only grow. I think its fine though. I would guess that total, on average, I spend about one to three hours a day on the internet accomplishing various tasks, if I had to do all of these things somehow without the internet it would take far longer. So really spending that time on the internet actually frees up more of my time that it takes up and I find it very entertaining and usually relaxing. I have a very busy life and getting to sit down to download a song or check my facebook makes me very happy.
